April 27, 2011

There are some dates in our lifetime that we'll never forget and April 27, 2011 ranks right up there with Sept. 11, 2001 for me. As we sit in our safe little Colorado home, we watched via internet news, tornados ripping a part a land that we love. It wasn't just Alabama for us...it was the city of Tuscaloosa that we grew up 20 minutes away from, the place we shopped, visited family, and attended college. It was Holly Pond and Cullman Co., the place we raised our family and lived for 9 years before moving here. And the whole time wondering how our family and friends were. It is such a feeling of hopelessness......

But I praise God that all of my family and close friends survived with very little damage! But my heart is still heavy for the 300+ life losses and devastation to the Alabama areas. Yes, we can replace things but it still hurts to see an area that you know will never, ever be the same. You put yourself in the place of those mothers who can't find their children or whose college student is missing and it breaks my heart.......

Please pray for the Regina and Ricky Hallmark family......Regina is a friend of mine's sister (Carla Scott) from Baileyton/Arab area. She had twins and lost her son, and her daughter is in critical condition. Regina also lost her mother and father-in-law and her brother and sister-in-law. I can't fathom how Ricky and Regina must be feeling right now. God be with them.....

Easter 2011

JESUS IS RISEN!! WE SERVE A RISEN SAVIOR!!! That is so exciting!

We have had an unforgettable Easter this year! Mike invited all our friends from Mason's baseball team and 9 families came today!!!! Two of those families have never been to church before and the rest of them are not actively attending a church! We were so excited! My friend Jennifer (who is Mason's best friend Chance's mom) attends our church and she has been instrumental in encouraging some of these families to come as well. We have been praying along with her that her husband would join her for a church service one day and he came today! It is so awesome to see the Holy Spirit moving and working, drawing people to Himself!!! Several people prayed to receive Christ today, including one of Mason's friends! Pray along with us that the seeds that were planted will be fruitful one day and these people will dedicate their lives to living for the Lord!

For the grandparents, here are some pics from our weekend.....

Decorating our eggs....

The Easter party given by the Vallecito Service League....
Haven's hair looked so cute this morning but after she walked out in the rain several times, it fell and one day I will learn to slow down and get a picture of her BEFORE the service.....

Haven has skates on which she put on after church. She wears them 85% of the time (getting her ready for a future job at Sonic!). The boys are in jeans....normally for Easter, I would have made them put on dress pants, but this year knowing so many of Mason's unchurched friends were coming, we wanted to make everyone feel comfortable in whatever they had on.
We hope everyone had a blessed day!

BRAZIL 2011

I wanted to give everyone an update on my most recent Brazil trip. I have to say this was one of the best times I have had in Brazil. God seemed to move in such and incredible way while we were there and many came to know Jesus as Savior and Lord. There were 2 men in particular that I love and care about a lot, and have been waiting 8 years to see them come to faith in Jesus and both of them received Christ on this trip, the same night. It was so overwhelming to watch God break them and draw them to Himself.

This is Washington, the owner of the hotel we have been staying in for 8 years. He is a very loving man but was lost without Jesus. Not anymore. He is now a believer.

This is Carlos. He was another guy we met 8 years ago who followed us around everywhere we went on a bicycle. Carlos loved us and we loved him but he got into alcohol and never came to church even when we were there. This last Sunday Carlos invited Jesus into his life and was saved.

Washington and Carlos's story happened many times over on this trip to Brazil. Many people found Jesus and I believe we brought encouragement to Pastor Renaldo and the people of First Baptist Church of Mathina. Here are some pictures of our time in Brazil. For those on this blog who have been there with me, these will bring back fond memories for you.

This is the hotel Pousada in Mathina where we stay everytime we go to Brazil. It has been painted since some of you have been.

Here is the church we work with in Mathina. It has been expanded since we were there last. There are no air conditioners and no glass in the windows. They open the shutters and let in some fresh air when we worship there. Notice the plastic chairs they sit in as well. Not much for comfort yet the believers here will come together and worship for hours, usually about 3 hours every night. So you guys stop complaining about your pastor preaching too long.

You guys who have been will remember Gabriela.

There is a local meat and vegetable market where the locals come each day to buy meat and things for the day. We would go each day and set up a loudspeaker and preach to the people in the market. It was pretty chaotic at times but we felt like we were right in the New Testament preaching to people out in the markets. Awesome times. Standing by me is Pastor Renaldo and to the right of the speaker is Thiago, our translator. He is such a godly young man with a great servants heart. He has been with us on every trip to the interior of Brazil.

You might want a chicken or duck for dinner so here you go. You get to pick the lucky winner for dinner

This is a picture of one of the booths at the market. The meat is just sitting out there and you pick the one you want. No cover, no refrigeration, just meat hanging around the market.

One morning we had a children's event and the church was full of children. We took some puppets to give to the church at Mathina and some of the ladies put on a puppet show and then I presented the gospel to the children. Many of these kids gave their lives to Jesus that day. Of course the day ended with kids getting Bom-Boms, candy and gifts to take home.

Here are some pictures of some of the baptisms while we were there. It is always a joyful time when you gather on the side of a lake and worship and praise the Lord while we are in the water baptizing people. By the way I always send Pastor Renaldo in first just in case there is an alligator or anaconda in the lake.

I know some of you will remember the church plant Roma. We went there one night to baptize people and have a service. It was so amazing there that night. Several people were saved and the church was just on fire that night. When we got ready to leave, the people of Roma gave us 4 quart sized cans of homemade caramel. We couldn't take them on the plane with us so we gave them to a missionary couple living in Sao Luiz named Mike and Julie Nichols. That is my one regret about this trip. I didn't get to keep those cans of homemade caramel.

This is Rhaysa. She and her brother Hans are very special to us. She was a young kid when we first met her and she helped translate a little for us while we were in Mathina. We are working on getting her and her brother to visit us in the US.

Of course no trip to Sao Luiz would be complete without a trip to the Pavan. This is a Brazilian barbecue place where they continuously bring around spits of meat. There are fillet mignon s, all types and cuts of beef, pork, chicken, lamb, even chicken hearts, which are a specialty in Brazil. Then there are all kinds of sides, desserts, etc. We took the Nichols family with us, 6 in all, Hans, Rhaysa, Thiago and his wife Togara. There were 14 in all. It costs about 50 bucks per person, but it is worth it after you have been in the interior of Brazil eating beans and rice and fruit with some kind of meat every meal.

We had a great time and I can't wait to go back. I love the people and culture of Brazil. God really uses me there in a way that I can't explain. I hope to go back many times to these wonderful people and places. Every trip is life changing.

Mike

BLUE LAGOON DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE

The dolphin experience was the reason we traveled to Blue Lagoon. It was so awesome!!! The dolphin's name was Andy and here he is playing a little ball with Mike before starting.....
Family shot with Andy kissing Landon...
Haven is getting ready for a hug....She was a little apprehensive but with Daddy by her side, she was very brave

Mike gets a hug.....
Mason was a little apprehensive too but he gets a hug as well.....
However, being his age and apprehensive resulted in a little splash from Andy (and trainer!)
Landon gets another kiss....
And Landon gets to dance a little with Andy!

Getting to feel his teeth....
And rub his belly....
A kiss for Haven.....
Andy sticks his tongue out at Mike and makes a rattling noise!
The kids loved this and it was a great experience!

These are some of the homes we passed on the way to Blue Lagoon Island. We were told that Tiger Woods, Oprah, and Michael Jordan had houses down this way but we didn't know if any of these were their's.

BLUE LAGOON ISLAND

One day we visited Blue Lagoon Island for dolphin encounters (those pics will be in my next post) and I think I loved this place more than Atlantis!!! I saw info on Blue Lagoon Island on www.tripadvisor.com and it looked like fun so we tried it out. While Atlantis has dolphin encounters, it was cheaper to go to BLI and it included a boat ride and meal.

Here's part of the crew before we loaded on the boat....(that's Cathy and Earl with us)
I have sooooooooo many pictures in this post that I am going to save the pics of the pretty houses we saw for the next post. Below, are the kids on the boat ride over.....
This was the boat we rode over on....

Entrance to Blue Lagoon Island
Who wouldn't love this place with hammocks between palm trees??!!!
The kids found a coconut....
and they tried hard to crack it open to try it's milk. Can you say YUCK!
It was just so nice to be in a place that was not so crowded! This truly felt like a tropical island!
Mike's favorite place on the island....

This is one of the beaches on the island and you can see Atlantis off in the distance....
Haven found her a pet crab!

Cathy and Earl......

Playing on the hammocks....

Where we ate lunch......

I just LOVE palm trees!!

Because we were away, we missed the funeral service for Shaniah. In an effort to show her family that we were thinking and praying for them while we were there, we wrote Shaniah's name in the sand and took a pic...

They had an inflatable playground that Haven enjoyed! That's her on top of the slide

A tower at the entrance of the island...

I know that was a ton of pics but my mom wants to see them all! I am just picking the best and condensing them. I loved every minute at Blue Lagoon Island and it was worth every penny! We highly recommend it!
